Troop Trip to Natures Classroom

On Saturday April 10th our girls will have a chance to take a trip to Nature's Classroom for their open house to celebrate Earth Day!

Nature's Classroom is a 365-acre environmental studies program and learning laboratory set in the real Florida environment. Since 1969 more than 328,000 sixth grade students from Hillsborough County Public Schools have experienced Nature's Classroom and now our girls will get to go and learn and explore firsthand!

We plan to meet at Ms Andrea's house at 9:00am and will drive there. More information will be posted as it is received. If you have any questions or would like to confirm or decline your  attendance for this you may contact Andrea or myself and of course post a comment here on the blog.

Camp Wai Lani 2011 Day Camps

Our girls have the opportunity to go to Girl Scout Camp at Camp Wai Lani this summer. Below are all the details. This is not a troop event so no girl is required to go but the girls who have attended these camps in the past have come back raving about them. If you are interested in attending Ms Andrea or I can forward you the email with the registration info. If you have any questions let us know.



Cookie Sales are Rockin!!!

Cookie sales are going great. Our girls and parents have worked very hard to get pre-orders and continue to do well at the cookie booths. Infact I even got an email raving about some of our girls.

At the cookie booth I attended with the girls they dressed up in cookie boxes and sold, sold, sold! And at the cookie booth this past weekend the girls did an amazing job on Saturday morning selling cookies!  People were giving them tips left and right because they were doing such a "great job" and were so "enthusiastic".  They made up some new songs and rhymes and were cheering for cookies.  So a big thanks to our Saturday Sales girls:  Hannah, Emma, Hailey, Gretchen and Brynlie and to all you moms and girls who have been helping with the cookie booths.

More World Thinking Day Info

Just a reminder...
World Thinking Day will be this Saturday February 26th from 10am untill noon.

Directions have been emailed to each girls parent but if you need further information please contact Andrea or myself.

Be sure the girls bring lots of quarters to purchase food samples and swaps and a bag to carry the swaps that they purchase.

For our costumes we will wear black shirts and black pants with a scart covering our hair to simulate an Abayah (the traditional dress of most Muslim Women). If you don't have black any dark solid color will do. Also please remember to bring your Girl Scout vests.

Schedule of Activities:
  9:00 - 10:00 a.m. Set up booths
10:00 - 10:30 a.m. Opening Ceremony (procession of countries, Pledge/Promise, Troop 351 to sing "This Land is Your Land")
10:30 - 11:30 a.m. Visit booths
11:30 - 12:00 p.m. Quiz followed by Closing

2/21/10 Meeting Recap: Encmapment, Thinking Day and more!

Encampment info:
Your Encampment theme votes helped choose this years theme! Our Annaual Encampment will be held April 5-17th at Camp Dorothy Thomas. As always we will camp for the weekend with other troops in our service unit. The online votes to choose our encampment theme have been tallyed and the winner is "Camp Rock". "Tropical Luah" was a close second.

With Camp Rock in mind the contest to design this year's Encampment T-shirt is now open.

The cost of Encampment should be somewhere in the range of $20 to $30 per girl and will go up based on amount of time staying.  The cost will include all meals, activities, T-shirt and patch.  There will be choice of Fri.-Sun., Sat. day only or day and evening only, and Sat.-Sun.  Activities planned as of now are swimming, archery, dance lessons/freeze dance, and a craft, with 1 additional activity yet to be determined (ideas are welcomeJ).  There will be a campfire (conditions allowing) and talent show Saturday evening.  I will have all date combinations with pricing after the leader meeting on Feb. 28th. 

World Thinking Day info:

World Thinking Day is February 26th 10:00am to 12:00pm at IDS. Our chosen country is Iraq. With all the media coverage of the war I think our girls were surprised to learn of the simple lives and rich culture most Iraqi famalies have. For our costumes we will wear black shirts and black pants with a scart covering our hair to simulate an Abayah (the traditional dress of most Muslim Women). If you don't have black any dark solid color will do. Also please remember to bring your Girl Scout vests. Also each girl who wanted a speaking part in the Thinking Day Skit has been given one. It us up to each girl to memorize her lines and to bring any props that she may need. If any girl can not make it on Saturday please let us know as soon as possible so we can make arrangements to fill her spot.

Welcome to our newest troop member Jolie! She is 10 years old and in 5th grade and has made it just in time to have a part in our World Thinking Day Skit/

And just a reminder that our troop has Dues of $2.00 for each meeting. This helps cover costs of supplies and trips. If you are behind on Dues or would like to pay for meetings in advance please see Andrea at the next meeting.

You could design the next Girl Scout Encampment Shirt!

At our last meeting we talked about any girl interested in creating a theme and art work for this year's Encampment T-shirt.

Last year's T-shirt is the yellow one with a girl riding horse back jumping a fence. The theme was "Sporty Girls Love Horses". This was the winner after girls voted.

All troops are eligible to submit entries from all girl members and will be posted on the site below after all submissions are in.
A few themes have been suggested but you may create your own.

January 11th Meeting & World Thinking Day

Yesterday was the first meeting of the New Year and we discussed Girl Scouts World Thinking Day.

For those of you who don't know what World Thinking Day is here is a little info.

Each year on February 22, World Thinking Day, girls participate in activities, games, and projects with global themes to honor their sister Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in other countries. World Thinking Day is part of the WAGGGS Global Action Theme (GAT) based on the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which aim to improve the lives of the world's poorest people. The theme for World Thinking Day 2011 is girls worldwide say "empowering girls will change our world."

This year our Service Unit will hold our World Thinking Day activities on Saturday February 26 from 10am until noon. It is a chance for troops to share information on different countries, exchange SWAPS, and of course everyones favorite... food!

This is our 3rd year participating in the event and this year we are representing Iraq and we want to have a particular focus on Babylonia.

All the girls have been assigned a task or topic to research.

Melissa and Emma will be working together to write a script for a skit we will preform.
Patricia will be researching what family life is like.
Hanna will be looking into the industry and exports.
Paige will be finding information on religion and cultural beliefs.
Aubrey volunteered to research and report on clothing and cultural attire.
Emily will be reporting on the geographic location and climate.
Gretchen requested to research the flag and make a model for us to display.
Lauren will be finding information on fortune telling and looking for ideas to make that into a SWAP.
Brianna choose to research food and drink for the country.
Haily, Issabella, Madelyn and any girl who has not already been assigned a task will be finding at least 5 interesting facts about Babalonian Iraq.

All girls are encouraged to not only research and bring in written information on their assignments but to also provide pictures and craft samples. Be creative. What the girls bring in to report will be incorporated into the skit that we will preform.

At our next meeting we will be sharing what we have found and also finalizing the script and assigning tasks for World Thinking Day.

Because each girl will be assigned a role any girl who can not attend should let us know at the next meeting.

All girls who attend World Thinking Day will receive a patch!

More details on the actual event will be given a little later.

Cookie Season is underway!!!

And last night each girl was giving her cookie sales information. Cookie sales generates a lot of money for our troop so please be sure to sell, sell, sell. This is how we pay for our activities throughout the year.

If you have any questions you can contact Pam. Her information is listed on the cookie form and I will post more info on the sale shortly but in the mean time... sell those cookies!

And there will be no meeting on January 17th as it is Martin Luther King Jr Day.
Our next meeting will be on February 7th.
